What is a blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is considered one of the most popular cosmetic plastic surgeries. During the surgery, the plastic surgeon removes any extra skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelid, leading to a younger and more beautiful looking eyes. Blepharoplasty can be performed alone or along with other facial surgeries like a face lift surgery.

How is the surgery performed?

For upper Blepharoplasty, the plastic surgeon makes an incision, about one centimeter above the eyelashes and removes extra skin and fat and then uses fine sutures to close the surgical wound. As for lower Blepharoplasty, the surgical wound is usually directly under the lower eyelashes or from inside the eyelid.

What should I expect from a Blepharoplasty?

Your expectations should be realistic and achievable. Good Blepharoplasty results, decrease the look of tiredness and aging of the eyes, which gives more confidence that lasts a couple of years.

What is the recovery period after the surgery?

The surgeon usually prescribes eye drops and ointment after the surgery. There will most probably be some bruises around the area in the first few days that ultimately resolve in one to two weeks. There might also be a sense of eye dryness that will resolve with using eye drops for five days after the surgery. The surgical scars of the Blepharoplasty usually heal well, but the healing process is different from one person to the other. Rest after the surgery is recommended for at least the first week, most people return to their normal lives after one week to ten days after the surgery. Strenuous activity is prohibited in the first three weeks after the surgery.
